Amsterdam is marking the 75th anniversary of the mass strike in the city triggered by the detention of 427 Jewish men during World War II.

Trams, buses and the metro stopped for one minute at 11am and passengers heard a recorded message from mayor Eberhard van der Laan about the February strike of 1941. The strike is considered to be the only mass protest against the Nazi round-up of the Jews.

King Willem-Alexander will attend a memorial ceremony at the Dockworker statue in Amsterdam at 4pm, which will be broadcast live on television.
