Occupy Amsterdam activists ordered to leave

Shortly before a court-ordered deadline, Occupy Amsterdam activists were still busy dismantling their camp opposite the capital’s stock exchange, vowing to continue their protest by other means.

They took down tents, rolled up their sleeping bags and a few were sweeping the square. On Thursday, an Amsterdam judge ruled that Mayor Eberhard van der Laan had the right to demand that the protesters dismantle the camp they had set up in mid-October. The mayor wanted to evict the activists by Thursday morning but the judge gave them until Saturday.

The protesters were ordered to break up their camp because it was deemed to be a nuisance for the general public, especially at night. The judge did allow them to maintain an information booth so long as no other events were held at the venue. Since an event is scheduled for Sunday, the booth had to be removed too. But the protesters will be allowed to put it back on Monday.

When the protesters moved into the square in October, they occupied most of the space. Later, they were ordered to scale it down and strictly observe the mayor’s demands.

The protesters say they are preparing further demonstrations and are planning to help clean up neighbourhoods and playgrounds.
